You are the Training department manager for a company with five subsidiary companies located in five different countries responsible for preparing expatriate employees and family members for the overseas assignment and for repatriation at completion. In the last two years three of your new expatriate managers had to return early due to inability to effectively adapt to the host country culture and laws for effective interaction with host country national employees. In the exit interviews it was noted that lack of proper language and cultural context training was the main reason for the three managers to fail in the assignment.
Your boss just advised you that the annual budget for your department is being reduced 25 percent and he wants you to “do more with less” and cut the expensive language training program contracted with the local university. You know this is a mistake and will result in more assignment failures. How would you convince the boss to keep the language training?
