Essay 2: AFAS 160D1

Fall 2019, Dr. Caves

In an essay of 1200 or more words (4-5 pages) consider one of the following essay prompts. Include a Works Cited page for all outside sources (besides the textbook). You may also use my lectures or the articles on d2l to help you discuss your choices.

Option 1: Compare and contrast two of the poets from this section on their representations of Africa and African peoples. Consider the context in which they were writing (time, place, their gender, their social economic standing). What audiences did they need to appeal to and how did this affect how they imaged and represented their “homelands?” You may also want to consider how they use figurative language, such as metaphor and allusion, in their imaginings of Africa and its peoples.

Option 2: Compare and contrast the representations of slavery and emancipation in two slave narratives. Consider the context in which they were writing (time, place, their gender, their social economic standing). What audiences did they need to appeal to and how did this affect how they imaged and represented their journeys toward freedom and the journey toward freedom for all slaves. You may also want to consider how they use figurative language, such as metaphor and allusion, in their representations of slavery and the fight for freedom.
