Help me study for my Art & Design class. I’m stuck and don’t understand.

Assignment 1

Content curation is the gathering, organizing and online presentation of content related to a particular theme or topic. In these exercises, the class will be curating a collection of related materials by selecting content to share. The collection will be built around ideas drawn from the curriculum.

Some observers have termed the 20th century the Race Era when it comes to evaluating artistic content. Numerous movements sought to explore and celebrate the arts of specific ethnic, political, and social groups. Your goal is to locate an example of a work that links art with inequality (ethnicity, feminism, colonialism, etc.). Look for examples that explore issues related to racism, gender, and/or social class.

Here is an example:

I selected this image because it struck a chord about a topic which I hear bandied among faculty on campus – criticisms which encompass collective accountability in regard to educational access and student entitlement. It makes me wonder what physical manifestations represent success to you (the student)? What is your measure for happiness? Do people without those ideas/objects lack success? This image addresses those ideas in a manner that makes me think about how we measure well-being both individually and collectively – which is also a part of why this class looks at cultural expectations through the lens of artistic expression. The Task:

1. Post the image AND the URL so others can view them – try not to duplicate each other. Write a paragraph or two explaining the connection between the image and the issue. (20 points)
2. Your post should be a minimum of 250+ words and you should cite resources used. (5 points)

Assignment 2

ournal exercises are all about reflective thinking. Not sure what that means? Well, reflection is a form of personal response to experiences, situations, events or new information. Think of it as a ‘processing’ phase where thinking and learning take place. College is pretty much a reflection period because you’re being exposed to new content.

In these assignments you select a prompt and respond. Each of these allows you to focus on a specific idea or example of art and then write your thoughts and reactions – essentially a reflection. Why do this? So you can see how your personal ideals and values influence the way you respond to art – which is the focus of this course.

Choose one of the following prompts:

#1: Everywhere a Photo
Visual information is key in making social networking popular. From digital cameras to cell phones, taking pictures has become an everyday experience for most of us.

    • How often do you take pictures?
    • What device do you usually use to take them?
    • How much attention do you devote to composition, lighting or arrangement in your pictures?
    • How do you use the images?
    • How do you think you can improve your photos?

#2: Film Study
The film industry is a major part of the economy and – like other artistic mediums – both reflects and anticipates culture. Although Hollywood arguably has a culture all its own, nowadays independent films (those made outside of the big Hollywood studios) have a larger effect on audiences. Because they can examine themes and ideas beyond what the big studios decide to finance, they can be quite influential in unexpected ways.

    • How often do you see a film?
    • Do you view films in a theatre or on other digital media?
    • What kind of films do you like; human interest stories, action films, romances, fantasy or animation?
    • What are your thoughts on film’s role to entertain and inform?
    • What is your favorite film? Why?

The Task:

  1. Identify which prompt you selected. (5 points)
  2. Compose a written response to the prompt. Be thorough and address each point or question in the selection. You can choose to do this as an essay or use a question/answer format. (15 points)
  3. Your response must be at least 150 words. (5 points)
